signing books at the public libr. i really enjoyed hearing him speak about his process as a writer. i could relate to some of what he said. i particularly liked that he said he cannot start a new book until he knows what the first line will be. he could wait months for that first line, before he can begin. i know what he means, i think. i will sometimes spend months “thinking” about a story or a chapter, before i can start it. i can’t do it until i know how to start. seriously, i know there are people who can write everyday but i’m not one of them. i DO write every day, just not the novel. there’s always some form of writing every single day, but it’s not necessarily focused on the novel or a short story i’m working on. this is why. i can’t write until i know where to start and where i am going and i have to think about it a long time sometimes. anyway. he made me feel better by saying this.
oh yeah, and he lives part of the time in NYC and part of the time in Paris.
