Legs
I don’t know where they went
what exactly
happened to them
the legs I posed, pointed
ballet toe
correction-
en pointe
next to that stone lion
in Rome
somewhere
after surprise brass cobra ring
I’d wanted
Carole and Ora
furtively buying when I’d turned
away for a second
amidst thick crowd
of Ponte Vecchio
us three
haggling for gaudy bracelets
we didn’t really want
just because we could.
I don’t know where
those defined muscles
from dance went
the thin ankles
long toes, firm calves
thighs thick but strong,
completely lean-
they’ve left me
or perhaps I left them
the way we do
unaware
until new photo shocks
and says
Oh yes, we’re gone
you didn’t realize did you?
Left on a bridge
near a statue-
another friend asked
What’d you do
on your 21st birthday?
Oh, I saw the pope
and now, I’d add,
And I left my legs
marbleized,
somewhere
in Rome.
i have not
practiced the piece harmonium by john adams. talk about switching gears. to go from bass to adams is just going to be insane. we’re also starting verdi’s requiem tonight, which i’ve sung before, in prep for the defiant requiem. this after rachmaninoff’s the bells (lots of poetry connections this year–whitman, poe, donne, and dickinson).
interesting line up. i’m enjoying the variety.
proposal accepted
i submitted a proposal to present at a regional tech conference in april and found out today that it was accepted. that’s my second one this year, the first for the state lib conference. i was kind of psyched. but then i realized, oh wait, you actually have to prepare for it too. ugh. it’s always worth it in the end, i suppose. if i want to get an academic position someday, it will be another nice addition to the CV.
